Costa Rican Odonates

Part of a family of tropical odonates known as giant damselfies or forest giants, it includes the largest of all damselfly species. They specialize in preying on web building spiders and breed in phytotelmata, the small bodies of water held by plants. Water filled tree holes such as the one depicted here are the most dependable and widespread habitats available. Adults are exceptionally large for damselflies with wingspans as wide as 7.5 inches. The male in this work is hovering, guarding the female as she deposits eggs in a tree hole. Nan photographed this species in Costa Rica on a trip with the Dragonfly Society of the Americas at the La Selva Biological Research Station.
